Military Hummer
If you are looking for a military hummer you can forget it because there is no such thing. The military hummer is a misconception that you will be able to learn more about here together with some other useful stories and information. The so called military hummer is an extreme success within its own designation. Problem is that in later years the military hummer has been used for used for missions that fall outside the original designation and there is has proven to be less effective. Here you will be able to learn more about the so called military hummer, what it was made to do and what is does today. Military hummer – HMMWV, humvee and hummerThe thing about the term “military hummer” is that there is no vehicle with that name. The hummer is a civilian version of the military vehicle that this text is all about, the HMMWV. HMMWV stands for “High-Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle” which is exactly what it is, a fast and flexible vehicle. Because of military troopers habit of renaming equipment so it is easier to pronouns and remember the HMMWV soon became known as the humvee. Therefore the military hummer actually is the HMMWV or humvee and has nothing to do with the civilian brand hummer, or at least very little. Military hummer – CreationThe creation of the military hummer, or HMMWV, began as early as in the late 70s when the US army requested a new kind of vehicle that could meet future demands and replace the aging trucks and jeeps that had been in service since the Second World War. The military hummer proved to be the answer as it was fast, agile and extremely flexible, thus taking a lot of different roles within the US army. The previously mentioned civilian hummer came onto the market in 1992 on public demand due to its symbolic importance during the Gulf War. Since then the military hummer has been seen in war zones all over the world. Military hummer – Usage
The military hummer is basically a very fast truck made for transport, pulling and scouting. With little change the military hummer could be turned into an ambulance, a troop transport, a command vehicle, a deep scout vehicle, a cargo truck or a carrier/puller of support weapons such as surface-to-air missiles or short range artillery. And all of these roles were fulfilled just as fast and agile as if the military hummer were unloaded. It was the perfect replacement for trucks and jeeps in any terrain or climate. Military hummer – MisusageThe problem came when the military hummer started to be used as for deep patrols, as an escort vehicle and even as a combat vehicle. The military hummer was never intended to perform in these roles and it soon became evident that the light armor of the military hummer was comparable to no armor at all as light infantry fire and shrapnel went straight through the vehicle. To meet up with the new demands there are now built-on armor for the military hummers but it makes them a lot heavier which have made them perform poorer in other roles and also gives them a higher centre of gravity which leads to a lot of accidents where the vehicle flips over. |
