Humvee Kit Car
A humvee kit car can look like the
real thing seen above.

The military Humvee and the civilian Hummer H1, Hummer H2 and Hummer 3 have inspired a wide range of different kit cars. One of the most well-known kit cars in the Humvee kit care family is the Wombat. The Wombat has been described as the perfect crossing of a Humvee and a Beach Buggy and is VW-based. The Humvee kit car is typically more robust than the wobbly Beach Buggy. It is much smaller than the gigantic Humvee and extremely cute. A Humvee is twice as long as a Wombat and the Wombat only have 2/3 of the Humvee’s height. Earlier, the Wombat was called HummBug, but General Motors – the owners of the Hummer trademark – demanded the HummBug Company to change the name since they feared that consumers might think that the HummBug was an official Hummer product. Many people still call this Humvee kit car HummBug, but the official name is Wombat. To avoid legal troubles, the owner of the former HummBug – now Wombat – company also changed the design of the Humvee kit car to make it less of a Humvee copy.

The Wombat is a recreational vehicle that does not have the same properties as the standard military Humvees. Purchasing a basic Humvee kit car from the Wombat Company is much less expensive than getting a real Humvee or Hummer. You can either assemble your Humvee kit care yourself or hire someone to do it. A small number of companies offer turnkey Humvee kit cars that will be ready to drive from day one. If you look around, it can also be possible to find auto shops interested in assembling your Humvee kit car for you. All these alternatives will of course make the Humvee kit car more expensive compared to investing your time and your efforts rather than your money in the assembling of your kit car.

When you purchase a Humvee kit car, it will typically contain a fiberglass body, the hood, inner steel subchassis and the windshield frame. This is naturally subject to change, and can vary between the various sellers, so before you make a purchase it is always advisable to check exactly which parts that will be included in the price and which parts that you will have to get yourself.

If you go for a Humvee kit car in the form of a Wombat, you will typically get a 1/8 inch thick, foldable steel tubing to use as a windshield frame, in addition to the parts described above. You can also chose to purchase a small collection of other useful items, such as a spare tire rack, a brushguard and a front skidplate. Humvee kit care devotes can spend their money on soft doors and a soft top, and install a heating and defrosting system.

As mentioned above, the Wombat is based on a VW platform. You can let the engine, drivetrain and front suspension stay were they are, and the entire length and width of the platform can be used – no modification is necessary. To make this Humvee kit car as durable as it looks, it is imperative to use a high quality platform in good condition. Rusty floor pans are not a problem, since this Humvee kit car has a fiberglass floor.
